The American Legion Boys State of Virginia is a summer leadership and citizenship program for high school juniors, that is among the most respected and selective educational programs in the country. Boys State provides young men with the opportunity to learn about government and politics through hands-on experience. It is a week-long event where boys assume the roles of government leaders, campaigning in mock parties to become city and state officials. The program aims to develop leadership skills and promote civic engagement. The 82nd session of the American Legion Virginia Boys State program is scheduled to be held on the campus of Radford University from Sunday, June 21 to Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Virginia Boys State provides participants an opportunity to learn, in a few days, the mechanics, objectives, and ideals of democracy. “Learning by doing” is the keynote to the success of this program. To qualify for selection boys must have successfully completed their junior year of high school and have at least one semester of high school remaining. Home schooled boys are also eligible. Those boys selected to attend must commit to the program for the entire week. Costs for enrollment at Boys State will be paid by Post 247.

To become a Boys State delegate each applicant must successfully pass an interview conducted by Post 247 The Boys State interview is a crucial step in the selection process for participants. It is an opportunity for the selection committee to assess the candidates’ leadership potential, communication skills, enthusiasm for public service, and to determine if they possess the qualities necessary to thrive in the Boys State program. Final selection of all Boys State delegates will be determined by the Post 247 Boys State Chairman. Interviews for Boys State delegates are scheduled for 3 PM on Sunday, March15, 2025 at Post 247, 11420 James Madison Highway, Remington, VA 22734.
