Each year, American Legion Remington, Harold J. Davis Post 247, in conjunction with the national Wreaths Across America, places wreaths at the gravesites of U.S. veterans who are interred throughout southern Fauquier County. On Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the Post also places small U.S. flags on those gravesites. At last count, the Post commemorates the service of 544 veterans who have answered their final call.
“Wreaths Across America” is a profound program dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of military veterans by placing wreaths on their graves during the holiday season. Founded in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, who donated surplus wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery, the initiative has grown exponentially, reaching cemeteries nationwide. The program relies heavily on the generous support of local communities, with each wreath costing approximately $15. Fundraising efforts are crucial, involving a blend of corporate sponsorships, grassroots campaigns, and individual contributions. The heartfelt donations from local supporters ensure that every veteran is remembered and honored, highlighting the collective gratitude of the nation. This tremendous effort not only commemorates the fallen but also unites communities in a shared mission of remembrance and respect.
Honoring the gravesites of over 500 veterans throughout southern Fauquier County is no small feat. It takes a small army of volunteers to organize, distribute Veteran’s markers, U.S. Flags, and the Wreaths to commemorate the sacrifice and service of the honored veterans.
On specified dates, December 14th this year, volunteers gather at either the American Legion Post, next to the Moo Thru restaurant on Rt 29, or at a designated cemetery to assist in the effort.
Many volunteers, choose to donate or help in the fundraising effort to collect sufficient funds to procure the necessary amount of wreaths. Families of fallen veterans often sponsor wreaths for their loved ones. Organizations sponsor wreaths for their former members. Neighbors get together and sponsor wreaths for friends and neighbors no longer with them.
